The Natural Horse Group was established in 2001.
It aims to provide information that enables people to explore ways of keeping and managing equines that enhance wellbeing and encourage a natural lifestyle

Livery Yards

Many members of the Natural Horse Group were disturbed to read the detail of the British Horse Society livery approval scheme. It is likely that all livery yards will have to be approved in the near future under the requirements of the forthcoming Animal Welfare Bill. The problem is that the BHS scheme does not meet basic standards for equine welfare in terms of behavioural needs, space and social life. Among other examples of bad horse-keeping, the BHS approval allows horses to be kept shut up in stalls or stables for 24 hours a day for six days in a month..

The Natural Horse Group offers an alternative scheme for anyone offering livery who would like to demonstrate that they are keeping horses in an ethologically acceptable way, that is, a way that recognises the needs of the horse for space, correct diet, companionship and exercise. If you are interested in taking part in the NHG scheme, or would like information about horse-friendly horse-keeping, please contact us.
